The list of abbreviations and acronyms in the streaming media industry can be overwhelming. In this article, we provide you with a high-level overview of frequently used terms so you can navigate smoothly through the somewhat confusing streaming media glossary landscape.

OTT = Over the top, this refers to the streaming industry where content is delivered over the internet.

VOD = Stands for video on demand, and applies to videos that are available for immediate playback in a library. In short it means that you can play a video whenever you want!

Monetisation = Highly speaking, monetisation means converting something into money. In the video world, it means generating income from your video content. And there are different ways to do it. See SVOD, TVOD, and AVOD.

SVOD = Subscription Video on Demand. This means using a subscription business model where subscribers are charged a regular fee to access your video content.

TVOD = Transactional video on demand. TVOD is a model that allows users to pay for the video they want to watch, also known as pay-per-view.

AVOD = Advertising-based video on demand. Using an AVOD model means that users get exposed to ads that finance the service in return they can watch the content for free. Adverts can occur before, during and after the video.

HVOD = Hybrid Video on demand: a service that includes a combination of AVOD, SVOD and TVOD content.

FAST = Free Advertising Supported TV: a channel or content on demand service that is funded by advertising that is presented to viewers.

API = API short for application programming interface. In short, an API is a software intermediary that allows two applications to talk to each other. Think of it this way: When you use a phone, you don’t need to know how it works. You just need to know how to call somebody. It’s the same with APIs. The applications don’t need to understand how the APIs work internally, just how to call a service and exchange information.

OVP = OVP stands for Online Video Platform. This refers to an online streaming service that mainly deals with the storage and distribution of video content.

Video CMS ( or VCMS) = Short for Content Management System which is a system that helps users manage their video content.

SaaS = Software as a service. Highly speaking this means a service that is available over the internet and accessed through a browser, meaning that it doesn´t have to be installed as software on each users´ computer.

EPG = EPG, short for "electronic program guide". It's a program guide that shows when an individual program is scheduled to be sent.

CDN = Content Delivery Network, which servers places around the world to provide fast delivery of content over the internet.

DRM = Digital Rights Management. This is a technology that you apply to make sure your video content is protected throughout the whole journey, from ingestion to distribution.

NLE = Non linear editing. This refers to editing that can be done in any order as opposed to analog editing. Non linear editing is non-destructive, meaning that you can do edits to the content without replacing, changing or deleting the original file.
